Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a branch of behavioral science that focuses on objective, quantifiable measures of learning. The basic principles of ABA are based on over 100 years of foundational knowledge, originally derived from studies of non-human animals. Over the past 50 years, ABA has been applied with increased frequency toward developing effective treatments for a range of health conditions including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This talk will provide an overview of the basic principles of ABA, its application to the treatment of core symptoms of ASD, and the application to of ABA to treat behavior problems that are commonly associated with ASD including severe problem behavior and feeding problems. The author will conclude with novel directions in outcomes analysis.
